In the footage, the child can be seen losing balance and falling off the platform onto the railway track.
Mayur Shelkhe, who works as a pointsman with the Central Railway (Mumbai division), is being hailed as a hero for saving the life of a child who could have got crushed to death under an oncoming train at a suburban railway station in Maharashtra capital. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media.
The tragic incident was averted at Vangani railway station in Mumbai around 5 pm on Saturday (April 17). The child, accompanied by a woman, was walking at platform number 2 of the railway station. Suddenly, he lost balance and fell on the railway tracks. He would have got crushed under an oncoming train had the alert railway employee not come to his rescue.
The Ministry of Railways has shared CCTV footage of the incident and saluted the pointsman for showing exemplary courage. The ministry tweeted: "At Vangani station of Central Railway, Pointsman Mr Mayur Shelkhe saved the life of a child just in the nick of the time. He risked his life to save the life of the child. We salute his exemplary courage & utmost devotion to the duty."
In the footage, the child can be seen losing balance and falling off the platform onto the railway track. He tries to climb the platform but fails. Pointsman Shelkhe saw the boy on the rail tracks and also noticed the oncoming train. Putting his own life at risk, he jumped onto the railway lines and in a nick of time yanked the child to the platform’s safety. Shelkhe climbed the platform just a few seconds before a train arrived there.
The divisional railway manager (DRM) also took to Twitter to praise Shelkhe. The DRM wrote: “Excellent work done by Central Railway Mumbai Division Mr Mayur Shelkhe (Pointsman)”
In a similar incident, three personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) rescued a man who he tried to commit suicide by jumping before a suburban train at Virar railway station in Mumbai on February 24. The entire incident was caught on a CCTV camera.
