Once an international footballer, this Bengal woman now works as a food delivery agent to make ends meet
There are plenty of cases where star athletes, who once represented the country on an international level, were forced to take up menial jobs to support their families. In some cases, the athletes got government aid, but most of the time, they have to let go of their dreams and settle for odd jobs to make ends meet. Such is the story of Poulami Adhikary, a footballer who once represented India at international level.
Shared on Twitter, a video of Poulami delivering food has gone viral. In the clip, Poulami can be seen wearing a Zomato t-shirt. She narrates her ill fate in the video. A resident of Shibrampur in Kolkata’s Behala area, Poulami is a 3rd year student currently studying at Charuchandra college. She explains in the video how she has travelled to Germany, the UK, Sri Lanka and many other places to represent India in Under 16 football tournaments.
However, Poulami couldn’t pursue her dreams and was forced to take up the job of a delivery executive to support her family. She says that her daily earnings are restricted to Rs 300-400 after deducting the price of petrol, but sometimes, the amount dips to Rs 150 on slow days.
The clip has garnered over 55k views and tons of reactions. People were shocked to see Poulami’s condition. Many wrote about how several talented athletes disappeared due to poverty and lack of government aid.
In such times, when Jhulan Goswami’s biopic starring Anushka Sharma will soon hit theatres, the plight of a talented footballer reduced to delivering food for a living is plainly distressing.
