MS Dhoni or Rohit Sharma? Sunil Gavaskar names captain of his greatest IPL XI of all-time
Gavaskar also named two spin all-rounders in his side in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Sunil Narine
Ahead of the start of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar named his best IPL XI of all-time. Gavaskar named a star-studded XI featuring some of the superstars of the game including MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli among others. Like any other IPL XI, Gavaskar picked four overseas and seven Indian players in his team.
Gavaskar picked the legendary MS Dhoni as the captain of his all-time IPL XI. One of the greatest captains of all time, Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings to three IPL titles and eight finals in eleven seasons under his captaincy. He has 110 wins in 188 matches - most by any captain in the history of IPL. Though Rohit has more IPL titles as captain (5) than Dhoni, Gavaskar picked the former India captain as the leader of his side.
Gavaskar named his all-time best IPL XI while speaking on a show on Star Sports. While he picked Rohit as an opener in the side, he went the explosive Chris Gayle as the Mumbai Indians skipper's opening partner. Gavaskar picked David Warner and Virat Kohli at number 3 and 4 respectively.
Both Warner and Kohli are known for their pedigree to score big one season after another and their consistency has been unmatched in the IPL. Kohli is the leading run-getter in the tournament with 5878 runs from 192 matches while Warner is third on the list with 5254 runs from 142 matches.
At number 4. he went with CSK's all-time leading run-getter Suresh Raina followed by legend AB de Villiers at number 5. Dhoni was named at no.7 as the wicket-keeper batsman and the captain of the side. Gavaskar also named two spin all-rounders in his side in the form of Ravindra Jadeja and Sunil Narine, who can both pick wickets at regular intervals and play sensational cameos with the bat.
Gavaskar picked Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to lead his pace attack. He named IPL's leading wicket-taker of all-time Lasith Malinga as the 12th man. “I’m sorry if I missed out any players, I’ve never been a selector in my life and I now understand how hard it is to pick a team,” Gavaskar said after naming his team.
