He will take over captaincy in April-May next year: Simon Doull picks MS Dhoni's successor at CSK

Doull also asserted that CSK will retain 'Mr Chennai' Ravindra Jadeja and star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022.

Former New Zealand pacer and celebrated match commenter Simon Doull has picked MS Dhoni's ideal successor at Chennai Super Kings (CSK). One of the most decorated cricketers in the history of the game, Dhoni architected CSK's remarkable comeback in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After recording their worst-ever finish in the 13th edition of the IPL, Dhoni's CSK bounced back by clinching the prestigious trophy in the 2021 season.

Even though Dhoni was in speculations about finishing his T20 career after IPL 2021, the charismatic leader of the Chennai-based franchise rubbished the retirement talks and vowed to play his final game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium aka the Chepauk. Though Chennai have remained keen on extending Dhoni's contract for the next few seasons, it remains to be seen whether Dhoni will continue to lead CSK after the 15th season of the cash-rich league.

Speaking about Dhoni's future with CSK, Doull remained skeptical about the Ranchi stalwart extending his stay as captain of the Chennai franchise next season. Doull believes former South African skipper Faf Du Plessis can succeed Thala Dhoni as CSK’s new captain next year. Du Plessis played a crucial role in CSK's fourth title triumph last season. The CSK opener amassed 633 runs from 16 matches for the Chennai franchise.

“When MS Dhoni decides to play his final game, Faf du Plessis will take over the captaincy in April-May next year. That's my thinking and I don't think MS Dhoni will play the full season. Faf du Plessis will take over from him. But there will be a home game where they will announce it will be MSD's last game and Faf will take over from there," Simon Doull told Star Sports.

Doull also asserted that CSK will retain 'Mr Chennai' Ravindra Jadeja and star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2022. "Ravindra Jadeja, he is Mr Chennai as well. He has got to be retained. What we saw from Ruturj Gaikwad, I think he must be retained. You don't want to let him go anywhere and the combination at the top of the order between him and Faf du Plessis," Doull added.
