Watch: Mohammed Shami gets emotional at Wankhede Stadium
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami secured a match-winning five-wicket haul against Sri Lanka in the 33rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023, contributing to India’s victory at the Wankhede Stadium.
Collaborating with pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, Shami orchestrated a remarkable batting collapse of the 1996 world champions.
Shami’s devastating spell marked his fourth five-wicket haul in One Day Internationals (ODIs), setting a new bowling record. Under Rohit Sharma, Team India dominated the match, beating Sri Lanka by an impressive margin of 302 runs in Mumbai.
With this outstanding performance, Shami surpassed bowling legends Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath. He became India’s leading wicket-taker at the ODI World Cup. Shami achieved this milestone by picking 45 wickets in just 14 innings on the grand stage of the World Cup.
On the other hand, Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath took 23 and 34 innings, to pick 44 wickets each in their World Cup campaigns. Shami’s exceptional bowling prowess has firmly established him among the cricketing greats at the prestigious tournament.
After the fifth wicket, during the celebration, Mohammed Shami knelt on the pitch and appeared to be emotional. Soon, he was joined by his teammates who comforted and congratulated the veteran.
Finishing with remarkable figures of five wickets for 18 runs in 5 overs, Shami played a crucial role in India’s comprehensive victory. The 302-run win propelled Team India into the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup, making them the first team to secure a spot in the knockout stage.
