'Do not put us through this': Doctor's gut-wrenching plea asking people to wear a mask goes viral

The year 2020 was a forgettable year for everyone. The novel coronavirus has devastated the world and it continues to do.

However, 2021 could possibly be the worst ever. Especially in India, the second wave has brought more destruction than before. The number of cases has crossed over 2 lakhs already and the death rate is surging.

The heartbreaking consequence of it is the families breaking. Many around the world have lost their loved ones to the deadly virus. Despite it all, there are scores of people who are acting indifferent towards it. They continue to flout the pandemic norms by refusing to wear a mask or practicing social distancing.

Their negligence is a heavy cost to pay, especially for the healthcare workers. Each and every day, the case load reaches a new height which is not only exhausting but heartbreaking as well. Doctors are there to save lives. They try their very best to do so as they are risking their lives to keep us safe.

However, this year, a lot of them have reached their breaking point. A heartbreaking instance of this is a post that is doing the rounds on the internet.

A Delhi-based doctor named Saandhra took to Instagram to explain the plight that many other healthcare workers around the country are facing.

"I've been telling people that their 22 year old son has died, lying to patients, telling them theek ho jaoge, when I know to my bones vo theek nhi honge..., hearing breathless women crying allah allah in anguish all night, watching people break down in front of me...," she said. She also added about how she had to break the painful news to the families that they will not get the body and listening to many mothers' anguish, asking her to save their children's lives.

Being in the PPE kit for hours trying to save everyone's lives is no child's play. Seeing so many dying around you, one cannot help but be extremely terrified for your loved ones.

Towards the end, she just has one request to make. "Do us a favor, I am not asking you to stay home, I understand that not everyone has the luxury to do that... Just wear your masks when you are out," she ends.

The gut-wrenching post went viral not just on Instagram, but on other social media platforms.

The request made is quite simple. It should make you really think about what is going on around you. It is not that difficult to wear a mask and maintain distance from each other.

The onus is upon us to be safe and keep others safe as well. Let us do our bit and not put a lot of pressure on the healthcare workers who are already fighting a tough battle.
