Hated BMW's current kidney grille design? You won't like what's coming next
BMW has filed for a new patent design for its iconic kidney grille with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The luxury carmaker plans to incorporate into its signature kidney grille, a single-light emitting panel that can be turned on and off to hide certain elements.
The patented images further showcase how the new grille design will change the entire appearance of future BMW models. In all probability, this new design will mostly feature in future BMW EVs. The absence of a radiator grille gives numerous scopes for automotive designers to experiment with designs, compared to conventional internal combustion engine-powered cars.

The closed-face grille design allows for a smooth front fascia, which furthermore improves its aerodynamic efficiency as well.
The patented images suggest that the new grille and DRLs will be illuminated at the front, while the headlight will be positioned below. Moreover, this closed panel is also expected to house several driver assistance sensors, which in turn will reduce the clutter from the front profile.
Earlier at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show, BMW debuted its most futuristic-looking mid-size sedan, the iVision Dee. The electric car demonstrated the brand’s new grille design which features a unique welcome scenario with voice and “phygital” icons. This technology has been described by BMW as something that can talk to people, and at the same time express its moods of joy and astonishment.
The iVision Dee also premiered the brand’s new E Ink technology that is used on the outer skin of the vehicle. This new paint technology uses 240 E Ink segments that allow you to alternate the exterior colors with 32 options.
