Fashion statements that ruled through the COVID-19 pandemic season

At the start of the pandemic, retailers pivoted their supply chains to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for front line workers.

As the world reopens, customers are shedding their well-worn sweatpants, donning a face mask and emerging from their isolation cocoons to tackle what is left of 2020.

Without having a catwalk of pavements to present our carefully curated outfit combos on, fashion enthusiasts are now desperately grappling at the seams of indoor-wear as an output for creativity. The pandemic paused all the important annual fashion extravaganzas, including Met Gala, which are truly responsible for bringing new trends to the world.

PPE goes mainstream

At the start of the pandemic, retailers pivoted their supply chains to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for front line workers.

Already popular in Asia due to the influence of streetwear combined with pollution concerns, coronavirus has transformed the face mask in the world as the unexpected accessory of 2020. With some countries requiring face coverings to be worn in public, non-medical masks have become a hot category to invest in now and in the future. Coloured and printed masks are becoming more commonplace, as well as licensed designs from musicians.

Post-pandemic, there will be a rise in demand for antibacterial fabrics and finishes, particularly for sports and outdoor gear.

Here are the current fashion trends of the COVID-19 era.

1. Comfortable clothes on top of everyone's list (Casual chic)

Since the need to dress up properly has fairly diminished since the beginning of the pandemic, comfort is the priority for all. Sweats, tights, and comfy crop tops are the new normal. The glorious athleisure for workouts is now our work outfit, market fashion, and even sleepwear. For menswear, look to promote lightweight fabrics such as linen and organic cotton, knitted polos or short-sleeved shirts, as well as short sets as an alternative to sweatpants and hoodies.

2. Creative face masks: Giving a spin to a necessity

Gone are the days when we used to freak out about peel-off or charcoal face masks.

Vanity was taken over by safety as protective face masks became a necessity.

But, creative spins to these masks have increased.

DIY and designer masks of different materials, filled with quirky patterns, floral embroidery, prints, and colors are the latest addition to the fashion accessories of 2020.

3. Bye-bye, heels; hello sliders, crocs, and flip-flops

Since there is nowhere to go, why should you give pain to your feet by wearing strappy heels?

In this quarantine season, sliders, crocs, and flip-flops have taken the center stage and are now the preferred footwear.

And, they are actually good since they are so relaxing and apt to wear while confined indoors.

4. Eye makeup beats lip makeup

Since COVID-19 began, our makeup routine has taken a backseat.

The only time people prefer putting it on is either during work video calls or for the little time we spend outside.

Since, masks are essential, applying lipstick makes no sense.

But doing your eye makeup creatively can bring life to your half-hidden face.

The clock is going to have to be turned back on mass-production of disposable items (at least until our wallets have recovered) and these trying times will unfortunately leave a lot of brands fallen at the wayside.
