Anna Sueangam-iam, Miss Universe 2022, wore a gown made from recycled pull-can tabs as a tribute to her her humble upbringing.

Anna Sueangam-iam, of Thailand, took the internet by storm after she wore an upcycled dress for the 71st Miss Universe preliminary competition.

The 24-year-old model, who was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2022, was seen walking in a shimmering gown made from soda can pull-tabs at the global beauty pageant in New Orleans.

Anna’s outfit, designed by MANIRAT, was not just a symbol of a circular economy but a homage to her humble origins.

The Thai contestant explained in an Instagram post that her gown of choice was a tribute to her garbage collector father, street-sweeper mother and her great-grandmother, who was a virtuous nun.

“This gown was inspired by the familiar surroundings of my childhood,” wrote Anna. “Growing up with garbage collector parents, my life as a child was among piles of garbage and recyclables. This unique gown was purposefully tailored-made with discarded and recycled materials, namely the ‘Can Tab’ to present to the UNIVERSE that what’s considered worthless by many actually possesses its own value and beauty.”

Anna was once called “The garbage beauty queen” by someone but she took it in her stride and her perseverance has led her to great success.

After finishing in the top 16 at Miss Thailand 2020, the model went on to win the title in 2022. Now, Anna will be representing Thailand at Miss Universe 2023, which is set to take place on January 14.
