Food shocker: Americans are just discovering jacket potatoes

But it so happens that many young Americans have been blissfully unaware of it.

A jacket potato is a type of potato dish that generally requires baking. The dish is very popular in many parts of the world as a quick snack as the potatoes get a fluffy interior with a crisp skin.

It can be accompanied by fillings and condiments such as butter, cheese, cream cheese, gravy, or any kind of dips.

Restaurants and households across North America and Europe prepare the dish in various ways. It’s one of the most popular lunches and dinner items in the UK and also in several other counties due to its versatility and easy-to-add sides.

But it so happens that many young Americans have been blissfully unaware of it.

On social media, many American users have said they recently discovered jacket potatoes for the first time. And naturally, many of them were intrigued. However, some deemed it to the food of a 'psychopath'.

The trend of not knowing what jacket potatoes are started when American model Chrissy Teigen tweeted about it.

Sharing photos of jacket potatoes with baked beans and another with tuna and cheese, Teigen wrote she learned about the dish for the first time.

As expected, many users, especially those from the UK, expressed shock. However, there were many who, much like Teigen, had no clue about the dish.

A user wrote, “I am reporting this to the FBI anyone eating this is a certified psychopath [sic].”

“As an American, it kind of appalls me that y’all put beans on other carbs (like potatoes and bread). I feel like I’d be overwhelmed at just how… thick it would feel? What’s it like?’

After reactions to Teigen's tweet started getting a lot of attention, jacket potato-loving people from the UK came to the dish's defence.

"The number of Americans replying to this who don’t know what jacket potatoes are is bending my brain a bit. For English people this is like saying you’ve never heard of bread," a user from the UK wrote.
