Chandni Chowk's chole bhature, Hyderabadi biryani: How Zomato's next-day intercity delivery will work

Zomato on Tuesday announced the launch of 'Intercity Legends', its intercity delivery service for popular dishes.

There's no denying the fact that India is full of flavours, varying from city to city and state to state. Think of Kolkata and you might start craving for sandesh and rosogollas while your taste buds would long for the rich biryani when thinking on Hyderabad.

Even though you might want to savour the delicacies from around the country, it might be hard to get them to your table the very same or next day. However, food delivery platform Zomato is now aiming to solve this problem by delivering the popular dishes the very next day.

Zomato on Tuesday announced the launch of 'Intercity Legends', its intercity delivery service for popular dishes. The company will pilot the initiative in Gurugram and South Delhi.

With ‘Intercity Legends’, no matter where you are, you can order and relish legendary dishes like baked rosogollas from Kolkata, biryani from Hyderabad, mysore pak from Bengaluru, kebabs from Lucknow, butter chicken from Old Delhi, or pyaaz kachori from Jaipur, CEO Deepinder Goyal said in a blog post.

How will these delicacies reach you?

Goyal said the company would leverage its vast network of “restaurant partners and delivery partners, deep understanding of food technology, and insights into what our customers love” to deliver these dishes in a day.

The food is freshly prepared by the restaurant and packed in reusable and tamper-proof containers to keep it safe during air transit. State-of-the-art mobile refrigeration technology preserves the food without the need to freeze it or add any kind of preservatives, Goyal explained.

Once you receive your order, you can microwave, air-fry, or pan-fry the food, just like any other dish out of the refrigerator.

Pan-India delivery soon?

Goyal, in his blog, said that a jewel hides in every nook and corner of India. With over 100 airports and a rich spread of the most iconic dishes that India has to offer, the sky is the limit to how big Intercity Legends can become, he added indicating that the company might soon deliver popular dishes across the country.
