UAE wins bid to host UN Climate Change conference in 2023

The UAE has sought to protect the environment since its formation.

The UAE has won the bid to host the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) in 2023.

The news was announced by UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change Sultan Al Jaber on Twitter, “I am honoured to express our deep appreciation for choosing the UAE to host COP 28.”

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai said on Twitter, “We congratulate the UAE for winning the bid to host the world’s most important global climate conference COP28 in 2023. Our nation deserves it. We will spare no efforts to make the conference a success. The UAE will remain committed to global climate action to protect the planet.”

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said on Twitter, “The UAE is honoured to have been selected as the host country for COP28 in 2023.

“We look forward to working with the international community to accelerate global efforts to address climate change & environmental protection & create a more sustainable economic future.”

The UAE has sought to protect the environment since its formation. Over the past three decades, the country has remarkably contributed to addressing climate change, becoming a leading global model due to the vision and directives of its leadership.

During the 2021 United Nations climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow, the UK, several international officials have expressed their appreciation for the UAE’s climate change efforts.

Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change & Environment UAE said, “We are proud to announce that the UAE will host COP28 in 2023. We are ready to deliver a productive COP that builds a strong economic case for climate action, and mobilizes countries to increase the scale and pace of their efforts to address climate change.”

“We are grateful to the nations that have supported our bid to host the crucial event. As the land of opportunities and collaborations, we look forward to bringing the world together to explore effective solutions to the most pressing challenges our planet faces.

“Hosting this global gathering will provide us with a prime opportunity to involve our most dynamic segment of society - our youth - in the meetings and negotiations that will ultimately ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
