People with ‘blood group A’ more vulnerable to novel coronavirus: Study

The same pattern was seen across all age groups irrespective of gender.

Chinese scientists claim that people with blood group A are more prone to be affected by the latest coronavirus, COVID-19.

As part of a preliminary study, researchers Zhongnan Hospital at Wuhan University collected blood samples from 2,173 people who had been tested positive for the disease.

85 out of 206 patients who died of COVID-19 in Wuhan had blood type A, while blood type O had the least risk. The same pattern was seen across all age groups irrespective of gender.

The study suggested the risk factor for those with blood type A could be linked to the presence of natural antibodies in the blood, but more studies were needed to prove the link.

Although researchers acknowledged the findings were preliminary, they urged governments and medical facilities to consider different blood types when treating infected patients. More study is required to
