Vaccination for citizens above the age of 60 and for those above the age of 45 with comorbidities started on March 1.

People above the age of 45 can receive COVID-19 vaccination from April 1, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Tuesday, adding that those without comorbities are eligible to get vaccinated in the next phase of the inoculation drive.

“After April 1, anyone who is over 45 years will get the vaccination,” Javadekar said during a press conference.

“I appeal to every citizen who is 45 or above to register for vaccination,” he said, adding that there was no shortage of vaccines for citizens in India.

From April 1, people above the age of 45 will not require a comorbidity certificate to get vaccinated. Javadekar further said that the decision was taken by the cabinet on the advice of the coronavirus Task Force and experts.

On Monday, the Central government wrote to states and Union Territories asking them to increase the gap between the doses of Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Serum Institute of India, to 6-8 weeks. The revised interval was recommended for Covishield and not for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin. The health ministry warned that the second dose of the vaccine must not be taken after eight weeks.
