Here’s how Delta variant is spreading rapidly and forcing lockdowns across the world
Covid-19’s Delta variant has managed to spread its tentacles in eighty five nations so far according to the World Health Organisation.
The WHO has warned that the Delta variant, the significantly more transmissible strain of COVID-19, is expected to become a dominant lineage if current trends continue and more countries are detected with infected cases.
India has reported over 50 such cases according to the Union Health Ministry. Even as vaccination drive across nations is picking up pace and the basket is widening with more vaccines against Covid-19, the rise of the Delta variant is stoking fears of new wave of Covid-19 in many nations.
Here’s what various nations are doing to curb the spread of Delta variant.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Health officials across several regions are recommending that people wear masks indoors and in public places, regardless of vaccination status. White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr Anthony Fauci called Delta variant the "greatest threat to America's attempt to eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic.” Dr Fauci said Delta variant makes up more than 20 per cent of all new cases in the US, which is a significant increase from nearly 10 per cent two weeks ago.
The United Kingdom reported most cases since Jan 30th on Monday. The government has delayed the final stage of unlock from June 21st to July 19th on the back of rising cases. Meanwhile, over 80% of adults in the UK have taken at least one jab against Covid-19.
Ireland has decided to extend curbs and delay easing restrictions which were due on July 5. As of now, curbs have been extended indefinitely. According to The Irish Post - The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has warned that the Delta variant will "almost certainly" be the dominant strain mid-way through July.
Almost 70% of Australia’s residents are under lockdown. Brisbane became the latest city to curb movement after Perth, this week. Sydney and Darwin are also under lockdown. "I think we are entering a new phase of this pandemic, with the more contagious Delta strain," federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told the Australian Broadcasting Corp on Monday.
South Africa is the worst-hit country in Africa, witnessing the third wave of infections. Government has imposed fresh restrictions starting this week, banning gatherings, etc. While announcing restrictions in a televised address to the nation, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said "Our health facilities are stretched to the limit... ICU beds are in short supply."
Israel’s remarkable and successful vaccine rollout has been lauded the world over. However, experts say, ever since Israel decided to drop wearing marks in enclosed public places, cases linked to Delta variant are seeing a surge. Israel reported its highest daily infection rate in three months on Wednesday.
WHO’s Covid-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update released on June 22 said that globally, the variant Alpha has been reported in 170 countries, territories, or areas, Beta in 119 countries, Gamma in 71 countries, and Delta in 85 countries.
