'Narendra Modi', 'Sonam Kapoor', 'Laden' names of voters for UP panchayat polls
A voter list for panchayat elections in UP's Siddharthnagar includes the names 'Narendra Modi', 'Sonam Kapoor' and 'Laden'. It also mentions 'Maya', with 'Mulayam' written in father/husband's name column. Siddharthnagar's block-level officer said the names were added by mischief ahead of 2015 panchayat elections and the matter came to light when the list was handed over to her recently.
People in UP were found to have been named after personalities such as Narendra Modi, Barack Obama, Amitabh Bachchan, and Osama bin Laden. The list gets even more vibrant, with names such as Katrina, Sonam, Hema Malini, and Helen.
If one assumed that the villagers were not particularly fond of India’s famous sports icons, there are MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Virender Sehwag too on the lists.
“In village families, when children do not survive for long, it is believed that if you give the newborn a weird name, he or she will survive. So you come across names like Gabdu, Udal, Jhankau, Badkau, Bindki, and Nati which are now common. These names stick even when the child grows up. There is no concept of nickname in most villages yet,” Nanhe, head of Arjunpur village in Sultanpur district, said.
Nanhe said that some villagers even name their children after administrative positions hoping that they will grow up and hold the same office. So, don’t be surprised if you come across bizarre names like Daroga, Collector, Kaptan, Manager, Sipahi and Lekhpal.
