The Enforcement Directorate had arrested Bineesh, Balakrishnan's younger son, on October 29 in the money laundering case linked to the drug seizure in Karnataka.

The central agency had alleged that Bineesh had close connection with drug peddler Mohammed Anoop arrested by them and the hotel, Anoop was operating in Bengaluru, was Bineesh's Benami property.

The ED probe stems from an NCB investigation that claimed to have busted an ecstasy pills drug trafficking racket in Karnataka in August along with the arrest of Anoop and two others.

Bineesh has maintained that he knew Anoop and his family and the latter had borrowed money from him and some others for setting up a restaurant business in Bengaluru a few years ago.

Since Bineesh's arrest, the opposition parties in Kerala had been up in arms clamouring for Balakrishnan's resignation as CPI(M) state secretary. Balakrishnan resigned on November 13, though the CPI(M) in a statement maintained that he had sought leave for further treatment.
