Mehbooba Mufti re-elected PDP president

Mehbooba Mufti has been the president of the party after her father and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died in 2016.

Mehbooba Mufti was on Monday re-elected as the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Ms @MehboobaMufti unanimously re-elected as @jkpdp president for a period of three years. Her name was proposed by senior leaders Mr G N L Hanjura and seconded by Mr Khurshid Alam. Senior leader Mr A R Veeri was the chairman of the party election board, ‘’A PDP statement said on Twitter.

Earlier, the party’s electoral college in Jammu unanimously elected Mehbooba Mufti as the president. Senior PDP leader Surinder Chaudhary was the returning officer for the election.

Mehbooba Mufti has been the president of the party after her father and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died in 2016.

Mehbooba Mufti’s three-year term as president of the party ended in October last year. According to party sources, the election to the post couldn’t be held due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Mehbooba Mufti was among over 50 political leaders who were detained after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. She was released in October last year after the government quashed her detention under Public Safety Act (PSA). Mehbooba was initially detained at Chashma Shahi and then shifted to a government building and later to her home when the pandemic spread in Kashmir.

The PDP is part of the six-party People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) that seeks the restoration of Article 370 and statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The PDP fought the DDC elections jointly in PAGD and won 25 seats.

Mehbooba Mufti has been the most vocal critic of the Central government for scrapping Article 370.

Of late, she has travelled to Jammu and many parts of Kashmir to mobilise support for the party.

She also visited the family of a policeman killed in Srinagar by militants on February 20.

Mehbooba Mufti’s re-election has come at a time when the mainstream parties in Jammu and Kashmir are struggling to make themselves relevant after the BJP government’s Article 370 move.

The PDP has suffered the most due to the decision to revoke Article 370 as many of its members like Muzaffar Beig and Altaf Bukhari have left the party.

Mehbooba Mufti will have to work very hard to rejuvenate the party at the grassroots to once again make it a force to reckon with.
