In worrying development, India’s COVID-19 positivity rate doubles in just 12 days

The COVID-19 active cases have now crossed the 18-lakh mark and are now at 18,01,316.

Amid the spiralling COVID-19 situation in the country, more bad news has come on the coronavirus pandemic front. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated on Sunday that the daily positivity rate in the country has doubled from 8 per cent to 16.69 per cent in just 12 days. Further, the weekly positivity rate has also witnessed a jump to 13.54 per cent from 3.05 per cent in the last one month.

India on Sunday recorded its worst-ever single-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Sunday with a record 2,61,500 new coronavirus cases reported over the past 24 hours, the data updated by the health ministry at 8 am showed. The country also recorded a jump of 1,501 deaths in the overall toll.

The ministry said 10 states/UTs including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan reported 78.56 per cent of the total new infections.

"The daily positivity rate in the last 12 days has doubled from 8% to 16.69%," the health ministry said in a statement. "The national weekly positivity rate has increased from 3.05% to 13.54% in the last one month," it added.

As regards weekly positivity rate, the state of Chhattisgarh reported the highest figure at 30.38 per cent, followed by Goa at 24.24 per cent, Maharashtra at 24.17 per cent, Rajasthan at 23.33 per cent and Madhya Pradesh at 18.99 per cent.

As regards active cases, five states comprise 65.02 per cent of the country’s total active cases. These include Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

India has registered a total of 1,28,09,643 COVID-19 recoveries so far.

The cumulative COVID-19 case tally in India stands at 1,47,88,109 with a total of 1,77,150 deaths so far since the pandemic started last March.
