Stalin elected DMK legislature party leader, to take oath as CM on May 7

A DMK release said Stalin was unanimously elected as the legislature party leader after his name was proposed by party general secretary

DMK chief M.K. Stalin was unanimously elected as the legislature party leader, two days after his party-led alliance pulled off a spectacular win in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Stalin will be sworn in as the chief minister on May 7.

A DMK release said Stalin was unanimously elected as the legislature party leader after his name was proposed by party general secretary Duraimurugan and seconded by principal secretary K.N. Nehru. The meeting, held at 'Anna Arivalayam' (DMK headquarters) in Chennai, was attended by 133 newly elected MLAs.

How did MK Stalin sweep through Tamil Nadu to form a government after 10 long years?

"Party president M.K. Stalin was elected leader of the DMK legislature party," the DMK said in a tweet. He will meet Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday and give him a letter on his election as the leader of the legislature party.

While the DMK won 133 seats in the 234-member House, AIADMK netted 66, with the rest being spread between the two parties' allies—Congress, Left, BJP and PMK among others.

The oath taking ceremony is likely to be a simple affair given the COVID-19 restrictions. Tamil Nadu continued to witness a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections, with 21,228 new cases being added on Tuesday, pushing the caseload to 12,49,292.
