Uttarakhand: Pushkar Singh Dhami to be the new CM
Khatima MLA Pushkar Singh Dhami is all set to become the new chief minister of Uttarakhand, a day after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned as chief minister after a less than four-month stint. Dhami was elected as the legislature party leader of Uttarakhand BJP at the party meeting held Saturday afternoon in Dehradun.
Dhami, who is a two-time MLA from Khatima in Udham Singh Nagar district, will be the eleventh chief minister of Uttarakhand. He is considered to be close to Maharashtra Governor and former Uttarakhand chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
"My party has appointed a common worker, son of an ex-serviceman, who was born in Pithoragarh to serve the state. We'll work together for people's welfare. We accept the challenge of serving people with the help of others, in a short time span," said Dhami, who will be the third Uttarakhand CM in under four months.
Dhami was picked from nearly half a dozen MLA names that were doing the rounds as probables for the top job, including Chaubattakhal MLA and cabinet minister Satpal Maharaj and Shrinagar MLA Dhan Singh Rawat. Central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and D. Purandeswari were present at the BJP meet to elect new Uttarakhand CM.
"We're happy with this decision. We got a young leader. We are going to win the 2022 assembly elections with a better margin," said BJP MP Ajay Bhatt.
