Two people died and two others fell ill due to suffocation while attempting to unclog a sewer line in Delhi.

Police said after sewer blockage issues were reported at Bakkarwala in Delhi, the sweeper of the housing society, Rohit, entered the pit, but lost consciousness due to poisonous gases.

When security guard Ashok entered the pit to rescue Rohit, he, too, fainted, they said.

Later, two other sweepers were called in to rescue the two people. However, they also felt uneasiness due to asphyxiation.

Local residents succeeded in bringing the two sweepers out of the pit, but Alok and Rohit were too deep in the sewer line.

Later, the fire brigade brought out Alok and Rohit by breaking the pit. Rohit and Ashok were taken to the nearby Rathi Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

Their dead body has been kept at the SGM mortuary. A case under Section 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered.
