The siren signals people to put away their electronic gadgets for 1.5 hours to take a much-needed break from screen time.

In a world where people live by tech – from ordering luxuries online to even necessities these days like groceries – it has become almost impractical for one to even spend a day without social media or smartphones. But that does not change the damage one can go through upon excess use of a phone, be it sleep problems due to the blue light or the harm that radiation does to the brain. Amidst this, practicing digital detox regularly, even if it is only for a few hours, becomes a must. And a village in Maharashtra seems to be doing this daily without fail – located in the Sangli district, the residents of this village put away their phones and turn off their television sets for 1.5 hours daily after a siren goes off at 7 pm.

The siren signals people to put away their electronic gadgets for 1.5 hours to take a much-needed break from screen time. This mandatory practice aims at helping children redirect their focus from wasting their time on the internet and channeling their energy towards studies and encouraging adults to interact with the community or take up hobbies like reading.

"When physical [sic] classes resumed, teachers realised children had become lazy, did not want to read and write and were mostly engrossed in their mobile phones before and after the school hours,” the village Sarpanch told PTI.
