I contested for the party, not for any selfish gains: Shashi Tharoor

He said he had called Mallikarjun Kharge in the morning and wished him all the best.

AICC president candidate Shashi Tharoor MP has said ``he has stood for the fray for the party and not for any selfish gains’’. Whatever may be the result, the party is going to benefit. After results all are going to work together for the party, he said before casting his vote at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.

He said he had called Mallikarjun Kharge in the morning and wished him all the best. ``I called to wish him well and to reaffirm my respect for him and our shared devotion to the success of Indian National Congress,’’ he said.

Tharoor also pointed out that he received a message from Priyanka Gandhi in the morning which said the election has done good to the party. ``I have contested for the party and the country. The people across the country have supported my candidature and am hopeful of putting up an impressive performance,’’ he said.

On the support the senior leaders provided to Mallikarjun Kharge, Tharoor said, ``the Gandhi family has not stood for any particular candidate in the election, which am sure. Only senior leaders have acted for a particular candidate which I had objected. I have several proofs to substantiate how a few leaders have played their part for a candidate. Some people play safe in order not to lose. But if you just play safe, you will definitely lose," he said.

He said that the election is like a cricket match where we cannot complain about the pitch. ``We will have to bat, and score runs irrespective of the nature of the pitch. Hence, I am fighting the election without looking into the outcome. But am sure I have fought the election democratically and never unleashed any personal attack against any leader,’’ he said.

Tharoor reached the KPCC headquarters to cast his vote after visiting the temple and he was received by the party workers. Even though he did not have the support of the senior leaders from the state, he was welcomed by all when reached the party office.
