Kamal Haasan slams Tamil Nadu Governor's inaction after SC sets Rajiv Gandhi's killers free

"Those in appointed positions should stop creating hurdles over the decisions made by the state government."

Actor-politician Kamal Haasan slammed the Tamil Nadu Governor for sitting on the recommendation on the release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts, made by the state cabinet in 2018 after the Supreme Court intervened and ordered their premature release.

"If the Governor had accepted the recommendation passed by the Cabinet in 2018, the four-year delay in the release of the six people would have been avoided," Kamal Haasan said in a tweet.

He added: "The Supreme Court's judgement is a lesson to Governors who interfere in the decisions taken by the state government. Those in appointed positions should stop creating hurdles over the decisions made by the state government."

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of all six convicts, including Nalini Sriharan who are serving life imprisonment in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, noting that its earlier order releasing another convict, AG Perarivalan, was equally applicable to them.

The top court ordered the premature release of the six convicts after holding that all of them are deemed to have served their sentence in relation to the crime.
