Knew him for 15 yrs, never thought he would commit such a crime, says Aaftab's friend
Nishank Modi, who had known Aaftab Poonawala for over 15 years, is finding it difficult to believe that the childhood friend he used to play with, had murdered a person, and that too in such a brutal way. The chilling details of Shraddha Walkar's murder shocked the nation and Nishank said that no one would have imagined that Aaftab Poonawala would be involved in such a crime.
Speaking to India Today, Nishank said, "Aaftab and I would meet after school when we went out to play and I have known him for over 15 years. He was well-natured and I had not seen any anger issues in him. Aaftab was good in studies and worked in a call center and also had done a hotel management course."
Nishank said that Aaftab had moved out in 2019 and had been staying at a different place. Aaftab's family had also moved out due to work issues, Nishank said.
He recalls hearing about Shraddha and how she used to visit Aaftab at his house. "But I had not seen her," Nishank told India Today.
"No one would have ever imagined that he would be involved in such a crime," Nishank said as more details about the brutal murder of Shraddha Walkar are being unearthed.
All you need to know about the grisly murder that shook the nation:
Aaftab had killed Shraddha on May 18, chopped her body parts into 35 pieces and dumped them in the Mehrauli forest area in Delhi over a period of 18 days.
The two had met on a dating app in 2019 and had been together since. Aaftab and Shraddha worked at a call center in Mumbai. The two moved to Delhi in May this year and moved to a house in Chhattarpur Pahadi.
Shraddha and Aaftab used to get into frequent fights over the issue of marriage. On May 18, the couple again quarreled and Aaftab strangled Shraddha in the heat of the moment.
Afterwards, Aaftab chopped off Shraddha's body into pieces and dumped them in parts of Mehruali forest area.
Aaftab bought a 300-litre fridge to store the body parts and used incense to hide the foul smell in the house. He used chemicals to get rid of any blood stains.
He managed to get away with the murder for around five months as he kept Shraddha's social media accounts active to mask her absence. It was in August that her father filed a missing person's report after no one could get in touch with Shraddha.
A kidnapping case was registered by the Delhi Police on November 8.
On November 14, Aaftab confessed to his crime and the police arrested him in connection with the murder of Shraddha Walkar.
On November 17, the Delhi Police was granted 5-day custody of Aaftab Poonawala in connection with Shraddha Walkar's murder.
