Three months after former actor and Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat was found dead in her hotel room in Goa, the CBI has filed a chargesheet against her personal assistant and his friend accusing them of murdering her to usurp her property. Phogat’s PA Sudhir Sangwan and his friend Sukhwinder were earlier arrested in the case.

They have been charged with Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder), read with Section 34 (common intention) and Section 36 (effect or death caused partly by act and partly by omission).

In its 1,000-page chargesheet filed before the judicial magistrate’s court in Mapusa, Goa, the agency’s Delhi unit has said that the duo allegedly forced Phogat to consume drugs (MDMA) till a few hours before her death.

Apart from witness statements, the cops have attached a CCTV footage from the popular beach shack Curlies, located on Anjuna beach, showing Sangwan pouring a drink down her throat. She started feeling uneasy and could barely walk on her own after drinking it, the agency has said.

Officials said that Sangwan had laced Phogat’s drink with MDMA (a synthetic drug) which made her spend nearly two hours in the toilet of the club where she was vomiting continuously. She was seen being carried out of the club at around 4.30am.

According to the chargesheet, Phogat was taken back to Grand Leonny resort in Vagator by her associates, where they had been staying. Hours later, she was taken to St Anthony’s Hospital where she was declared brought dead. According to CBI, the duo allegedly overdosed her in order to murder her and usurp her money and property.

The case was earlier probed by the Goa Police and the investigation was later transferred to the CBI on the demand of Phogat’s family. Police had arrested five people in the case including Curlies owner, Edwin Nunes, and the caretaker of the resort Phogat was staying at. Earlier this month, Nunes was arrested by the Telangana Police along with others from Anjuna in Goa in a drug bust in Hyderabad.

Phogat, who had contested the 2019 assembly polls in Haryana and lost, was with BJP since 2008. She was popular on Instagram and video-sharing app Tik tok. The case is scheduled to be heard again on December 5
