India Gate, other Delhi monuments lit purple on World Disability Day

In a unique endeavor to honor Persons with Disabilities and salute their resilience, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) lit up three iconic monuments including Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate on World Disability Day on Saturday.

The theme of the 2022 International Day of Persons with Disabilities is Transformative Solutions for Inclusive Development: The Role of Innovation in Fueling an Accessible and Equitable World.

“The bright, purple-lit buildings are a tribute to the indomitable spirit of disabled people in India. This is also an occasion to salute their resilience,” said Arman Ali, Executive Director, NCPEDP.

These monuments including India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhawan, and Parliament House were lit up to spread awareness about the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development. It is also an attempt to magnify the voices of persons with disabilities, whose inclusion is critical to every aspect of life – economic, political, social, and cultural.

“It is a matter of pride and gratitude for us to be a part of this event. We take this opportunity to further our knowledge and awareness about disability rights. People who are suffering with disabilities are not aware of their rights and rules made by the Government. On this day I want to earnestly request the disabled people, government agencies, academia, and legislators to come forward to spread awareness and education which is imperative for the empowerment of the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs),” said Arman Ali, Executive Director, NCPEDP.
