A video of an encounter between an octopus and a man on a beach in Australia has gone viral on social media. Geologist Lance Karlson was planning to take a dip near the resort he and his family were staying at in Geographe Bay, on Australia’s southwest coast, when he spotted the octopus. He initially thought that it was the tail of a stingray emerging from the water and striking a seagull.

However, when he walked closer to the sea with his two-year-old daughter, he discovered that it was an octopus. He took a video of the angry creature in shallow water taking a sudden strike in his direction with its tentacles.

"The angriest octopus in Geographe Bay! After going after a seagull it then decided my daughter and I deserved a lashing! I later discovered its home amongst a crab graveyard, where it came after me again!" Karlson captioned the video.

"The octopus lashed out at us, which was a real shock," Karlson told Reuters.

He set up a sun protection tent on the shore for his family and went in the water alone to explore a collection of crab shells. While swimming, he felt another whip across his arm – followed by a more forceful sting across his neck and upper back.

A shocked and confused Karlson rushed to the shore ad spotted raised imprints of the tentacles across his arm, neck and upper back. He did not have vinegar, his preferred treatment for sea animal stings. So, he decided to pour cola over the affected area, which worked well to stop the stinging.
