A look into India's first underwater metro

By 2023, the metro will soon travel underwater, a first for the country

By 2023, the first underwater train in India will have reached Kolkata. The Hooghly River may now be crossed thanks to construction done by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC). This twin tunnel will span 500 metres, connecting the East and West corridors. The Hooghly River will be 13 metres below the train.

According to media reports, the train will be travelling at a depth equivalent to an underground 10-story building. Concrete rings 1.4 metres wide, which will be a part of the metro station, will be used to construct the tunnel. Hydrophilic gaskets will be installed in the tunnel to keep water out. This project will probably cost around Rs 8,600 crore.

The duration and time required for journey will both be reduced by the train. The current Kolkata Green Line takes just 6.97 kilometres to travel from Phoolbagan to Sector V. The time it takes to get from Sector V to Howrah will be cut down thanks to this train.

Hauz Khas metro station in Delhi is now one of the deepest. The depth of it is 29 metres. On the other side, the Howrah metro station will become the first and deepest station in the country when the new metro line is built there.

In Sealdah, a new underground metro station for the East-West corridor was recently opened by Union Minister Smriti Irani. There are four additional underground stations: Howrah Maidan, Howrah, Mahakaran, and Esplanade. In less than a minute, the train will assist in crossing the Hooghly River.

To stop water from getting into the tunnels, hydrophilic gaskets have been placed. There will be emergency exits in the tunnels for things like earthquakes. The tunnels will have walkways created in case of an emergency. Passengers have access to specific exits in case of a technical problem. Fly ash and micro-silica were added to the concrete mix to provide the tunnel its waterproofing and suitability for usage underwater properties.

According to sources, the Japan International Cooperation Agency contributed 48.5% of the project's cost (Jica).
