What is the SS Rajamouli curse, and how it affected Prabhas, Ram Charan

The SS Rajamouli curse continues to haunt his actors, and the most recent example is that of RRR star Ram Charan, and Prabhas before that.

Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli is one of the finest directors in the Indian film industry. With the blockbuster success of RRR, SS Rajamouli showed that the Baahubali duology isn't a one-time box office wonder. But it isn't always a pleasant tale for the actors who work with the master craftsman. History suggests that any hero who works with SS Rajamouli tends to deliver a box office dud with his immediate next film, after the Rajamouli directorial venture. Baahubali Prabhas and RRR star Ram Charan weren't spared.

Prabhas attained nationwide fame and attention with the Baahubali duology. But he followed it up with Saaho, which turned out to be a dud. One of the main reasons behind Saaho's failure could be the fact that the audiences were expecting another larger-than-life action drama from Prabhas. Saaho neither had larger-than-life appeal nor did it have compelling action blocks. However, the positive momentum Prabhas garnered with Baahubali rubbed off on Saaho, and the film registered decent theatrical revenues in the Hindi belt. But as a whole, Prabhas couldn't break the Rajamouli curse and followed up the epic Baahubali with Saaho.

Ram Charan was recently seen in SS Rajamouli's action epic RRR. His immediate next theatrical release was Acharya, co-starring dad Chiranjeevi, which was released just 5 weeks post RRR. While RRR was a Rs 1000+ crore grosser at the global box office, Acharya struggled to even get past the Rs 100-crore gross mark and that sums it up.

Previously, Charan worked with Rajamouli for Magadheera, and strangely enough, his immediate film, Orange, was a box office disaster. Ram Charan has evidently failed to break the Rajamouli curse for the second time too.

Incidentally, even Ajay Devgan, who played a brief role in RRR, couldn't escape the Rajamouli curse as his immediate next film, Runway 34, failed to put on a good show at the box office.

Will Saif Ali Khan be a bad choice in Prabhas-starrer 'Adipurush'?

Ram Charan had already proven that the said Rajamouli curse is near impossible to break. But Jr NTR will get his bite at the cherry with NTR30, a Koratala Siva directorial. This will be NTR's immediate next outing after RRR. Another interesting observation is that Koratala Siva had previously directed Ram Charan's Acharya and this time around, he too will be looking to undo the enigma by delivering a box office winner with NTR30. The onus is now on Jr NTR as he has to break the age-old curse and deliver a box office winner with NTR30. Can he do so?

One needs to note that what matters here is the content of the film. The Rajamouli curse can't be used to validate a film's failure at the box office. If a film has what it takes to enthral the audience, it is bound to receive a thumping reception from the audience. It is true that Rajamouli makes larger-than-life films with his heroes, and it is tough for them to deliver as big a success with their next. But that is one of the challenges one must face after they have worked with one of India's finest filmmakers.

As for Rajamouli, he will be working with Mahesh Babu in his next project, which is tentatively titled SSMB28. The star director had recently announced that he is conceiving a mega-budget action epic with Mahesh Babu and affirmed that the project will be mounted on a lavish scale. This project is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2023.
