When Amitabh Bachchan was declared ‘clinically dead’ after being injured on the sets of Coolie

Amitabh Bachchan was severely injured while shooting for Coolie in 1982. He was even declared ‘clinically dead’ for a while before being revived.

Bollywood Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was recently injured while shooting an action scene in Hyderabad for the Prabhas-led Project K. He revealed, in his blog, that he suffered a tear to the right rib cage and added that his rib cartilage too was damaged.

This, however, is not the first time that Big B has picked up a major injury while shooting for a film. In 1982, he suffered a near-fatal injury while shooting for Coolie, directed by Manmohan Desai. The incident brought the nation to a standstill as countless fans prayed for the Angry Young Man’s well-being.

In 1982, nearly 40 years ago, Amitabh Bachchan suffered a severe injury while shooting an action sequence with Puneet Issar in Bengaluru for Coolie. Big B mistimed a jump at a crucial moment, which resulted in his co-star accidentally delivering a lethal punch to his gut. Big B soon lost consciousness and was rushed to St Philomena's hospital for an emergency operation. Post this, he was shifted to Mumbai.

Big B, who was bleeding profusely in his lower abdomen, was initially declared ‘clinically dead’. The doctors, however, revived him by giving him an adrenaline injection. Fans wrote letters in blood for the actor while he was in hospital. Top politicians too prayed for his recovery.

The film’s climax was changed because of the accident. The original plan was to have Big B's character die towards the end, but the makers decided against going through with it.

Years later, Big B opened up about the accident in a blog post.

His post read: "I went into almost a haze and a coma-like situation. Within five days of coming into Breach Candy, I had another surgery and didn’t come out of that one for a very, very long time and I was clinically dead for a couple of minutes. Then Dr Wadia, who looked after me and is an absolute life-saver, just said “I’m going to take a last chance” and he started pumping cortisone/ adrenaline* injections into me one after another almost, 40 ampules of it, with the hope that something would happen and then I got revived”

Coming back to the present, Big B will be resuming work on Project K after recovering from his rib injury. He will also be seen in the courtroom drama Section 84.
