What if there was no music in this world?

What if there was no music in this world?

For thousands of years, man and beast sounds were vital in community building, mating and mental well-being.

If we didn’t have music, imagine all the video songs with only the dance moves and no sound to it! How disconcerting would it be! Phew! Thank goodness to someone that we can now plug in our headphones and relax ourselves with some music!

We have reached a period of time that we cannot imagine life without music. Well, what we mean is not the death of iPod or any music streaming app, but the complete absence of melody. A world without ringtones, alarms, message alerts, bird chirps, cat calls, humming, whistling but more of awkward instances in life!

For us living beings, music is more than a sound track to our lives. It is one of the characteristics of how we understand each other. A baby responding to how a parent speaks to him/her in baby talk is the earliest form of communication that shows how humans manipulate sounds and gestures to ease communication. Researchers believe baby talk was the precursor to vocal music.

Without music, life would be a mistake

Now another question arises are you willing to survive in complete silence?

The income music streaming apps and live concert ticket sellers get should tell you that we love our music. According to estimates, an average human listens to roughly 32 hours of music in a week in the form of iPods, radio and television. But what if we were forced to live without music? How do you think humankind will cope to the sudden closing down of music industry which is closely linked to physical and mental health?

Economically, we would be hurt, as people paying to attend concerts would buy tickets to attend lectures and laugh at stand-up comedians. With increased alertness, we might actually become more informed of the outside world and insightful. Unfortunately, movies, television and theatre will lose a lot of their drama unless you would want to sit through monologues.

We would all lose a universal language. The world would become more divided and reluctant to embrace diversity. Many personal relationships would deteriorate as music has been proven to release endorphins in the brain.

A team of researchers from Finland found that stroke patients who listened to music two hours of music everyday recovered faster than those who didn’t. A study in 2013 showed that listening to music while driving, drivers broke the rules and were more aggressive.

Doctors have also found that while treating patients with memory loss, patients could recall specific lyrics and melodies even if they forgot basic things like their address or their birthday.

We have been taking music for granted, haven’t we? Music is not just a song playing on your iPod or the radio. There's more to it. Listen carefully, and you will find that music shines through every action, it resides in every emotion, it hides in every word, it resonates in every moment, and in moments between those moments.
