While the global Green movement advocates greater corporate accountability for climate change, the Google Doodle for Earth Day 2023 is a clarion call for individual action.

Every year since the first ever Earth Day in 1970, the observance has been celebrated globally on April 22. For its 53rd iteration, Google unveiled a special Google Doodle on Saturday to raise awareness of the pressing environmental issues.

Even though the global Green movement advocates for greater corporate accountability for climate change, the Earth Day 2023 Google Doodle is, in many ways, a clarion call for individual climate action.

“Today’s annual Earth Day Doodle highlights how individuals and communities can work together in big and small ways to take action against climate change,” Google explained.

The search engine's homepage artwork highlights the multi-faceted impact of human existence on planet Earth, including the way we travel, use energy or the food we eat. Made from "real leaves”, the Earth Day Google Doodle depicts a spectrum of actions that, on a large scale, can make a big difference.

According to a description, these actions include: “at home: opting to air dry laundry instead of using the dryer; how/what we consume: practicing a plant-based diet or opting for plant-based options when possible; how we get around: walking or riding a bike instead of driving, when possible”.

World Earth Day

Earth Day began as a grassroots movement in United States after Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, moved by the devastating Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969, mobilised environmental activists and members of the community to take action for the planet — with over 20 million Americans rallying and marching down the country's streets to bring ecological concerns into the public consciousness.

Commonly referred to as World Earth Day, the global event also led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and has come to be celebrated by more than 190 countries. Over the course of the decades since, several Earth Day themes have shed light on the increasingly complex climate crisis.

The official theme for Earth Day 2023 is "Invest In Our Planet" — a call for governments and organisations to reconsider their business-as-usual approach and shift to renewable energy in humanity's overarching endeavour to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
