Dubai announces free Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination campaign
A message on Dubai Health Authority's hotline said the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccine would be for citizens and Dubai residents 60 years and above
Dubai's Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management has announced an extensive vaccination campaign against Covid-19, which will start in the emirate on Wednesday. The vaccination will use Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine and is free of charge.
It is the second vaccine made available in the UAE after the Sinopharm vaccine was approved for use last month.
Instead of using inactivated virus, like the Sinopharm vaccine, the Pfizer-BioNTech shot has a piece of genetic code that trains the immune system to identify the spiked protein on the surface of the virus.
A message on Dubai Health Authority's hotline said the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccine would be for citizens and Dubai residents 60 years and above, as well as for individuals with chronic illness who were above the age of 18.
Emirates Skycargo has transported the first batch of Pfizer-Biontech COVID-19 vaccines for Dubai Health Authority. The “mRNA vaccine” was developed by US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and the German biotech company BioNTech.
"Authorising the registration of the vaccine comes after Pfizer had submitted all required documents in compliance with the measures and systems in place in the UAE and in accordance with international safety and effectiveness standards," the state news agency WAM quoted Dr. Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary of Public Health Policy & Licensing as saying.
UAE has recorded 195,878 coronavirus cases and 642 deaths so far from the virus.
