UAE experiences cold wave, temperature drops to 1.9°C

The weather body said the weather would be fair during the day and cold at night

The UAE has been experiencing a cold spell in the first week of 2021 with temperature dipping down to as low as 1.9°C in remote areas of the country.

Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are witnessing a remarkable drop in mercury levels. The sudden plunge in temperature prompted residents to bring out their woollens.

The chilly weather across the country is linked to the unexpected lows in Raknah, a remote area in Abu Dhabi.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) on Wednesday recorded the lowest temperature in the area. The NCM said, “The lowest temperature recorded over the country this morning was 1.9°C in Raknah at 07:15 UAE local.”

The weather body said that the highest temperature recorded in the country was 27.7 °C in Sweihan at 2pm. The NCM expects the weather on Thursday to be partly cloudy.

It said the weather would be fair during the day and cold at night, especially in the interior and mountainous areas, and cloudy over the sea, islands and some western coastal areas with the possibility of light rain during the day.

It expects the temperature to show a slight decrease in the cities across the UAE.

The NCM has urged motorists to take all precautions and follow the traffic regulations regarding chances of fog and poor visibility. The centre said horizontal visibility is likely to deteriorate over some internal western areas after midnight till the morning. The NCM also said the sea would be moderate in general and rough at times northward in the Arabian Gulf.

Last year, heavy snowfall and rain were witnessed on Jais Mountain in Ras Al Khaimah.
