If at all you get a chance to walk through the Hall of Nations at the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington DC in the US till March 21, 2020, you will find the portrait of 100 women who ‘used their power to empower’, one among them being Neysara Rai, a trans woman from Manguluru who is also the founder of transgenderindia.com.

The exhibition, The ‘Vital Voices: 100 Women Using their Power to Empower’ opened the John F Kennedy Centre on March 8, 2020 and will be in display for a fortnight.

Among the 100 women, the exhibition will feature, Malala Yousafzai; Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nadia Murad; Chief Kachindamoto, working to stop child marriage in Malawi.

The portraits are created by artist and illustrator Gayle Kabaker, who is renowned for her New Yorker covers.

Neysara now lives in Amsterdam with her husband. The exhibition is part of an initiative to commemorate 100 years of the 19th amendment to the American Constitution that gave women the right to vote.

Neysara is a human rights activist who empowers thousands of transgender people across India with awareness and knowledge to make informed choices, thereby preventing them from being lured into sexual or labor trafficking in the name of culture or tradition.

Neysara also started the first ever trans-specific online discussion forum in India called “TALK”, which allows trans-people around the country to question and discuss issues about gender, life, career, and transition. “TALK” helps establish people-to-people connection between transgender people who are otherwise often isolated.
