Rishi Sunak’s conversation with homeless man goes viral

As a man approaches the counter, the Prime Minister tries to strike up a conversation with him and asks him about the food items he would like to have.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak seems to be on the receiving end of criticism for his awkward conversation with a homeless man at a soup kitchen. After Liz Truss’ abrupt resignation, Sunak took over the post with a lot of promises to strengthen the British economy. However, the Conservative Party leader was called out for not understanding the plight of the citizens. Adding fuel to the fire was this video of Sunak volunteering at a soup kitchen before Christmas and striking up an uncomfortable conversation with a homeless man.

Angela Rayner, a Labour Party MP, took to Twitter to share a video of the gaffe. Rayner termed the interaction as ‘excruciating’ to watch. In the video, Sunak can be seen volunteering at a soup kitchen. As a man approaches the counter, the Prime Minister tries to strike up a conversation with him and asks him about the food items he would like to have. The man asks Sunak if he was trying to sort the economy, to which Sunak gives an affirmative reply.

Sunak then proceeds to ask the man, “Do you work in business?” The awkward question prompted a flurry of irritated reactions from netizens. The man, on the other hand, replies, “I am homeless. I am a homeless person, but I am interested in business.”

The video further shows Sunak and the man talking about the latter’s interest in business and finance. The man also expresses his desire for temporary accommodation as he is homeless during Christmas. However, Sunak seems to ignore the fact and talk about a career in finance.

Several opposition party leaders pointed out how Sunak blatantly ignored the man’s needs and simply struck up a conversation for a photo op. People also expressed that Sunak should be working towards making strong policies that would make sure shelter homes and soup kitchens were not necessary instead of volunteering in one. Many commented on how Sunak should be more sympathetic to the needs of the people.
