Man 'decorates house' with hand grenades without realising they are live, bomb squad saves the day

Devon and Cornwall Police later confirmed that the man had actually decorated his home with grenades without realising they were live.

A man in Summercourt, UK almost blew himself up and half of his entire neighbourhood by decorating his house with live grenades.

A section of a Cornish village had to be closed off after Police and emergency services were called to Summercourt, Cornwall on Tuesday afternoon.

The officers had to also shut down major roads and a bus garage due to the bomb scare.

Devon and Cornwall Police later confirmed that the man had actually decorated his home with grenades without realising they were live. Eventually, they were removed and disposed of by a bomb squad.

Following the operation, the man explained to the officers that he bought the hand grenades for only ‘decorative’ purposes and didn't have any idea they were live. He added that he had bought the items in good faith for decorative purposes and did not believe they were live.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers found three suspected hand grenades inside a property in Summercourt, Cornwall, while carrying out a routine call at about 11.20 am on Tuesday, 31 January."

"The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called to assess the items. A local road closure and a 50-metre cordon were put in place, and a nearby property was evacuated as a precaution," the spokesperson added.
