Student Visa: Australia to remove unlimited work hours for foreign students, extend post-study stay from July
Australia will be bringing back its limitation on working hours for foreign students from July 1, 2023, onwards. However, despite the Australian government reinstated their cap on work hours for international students, they would also be extending the duration of the post-study stay for student visa holders.
As per the Australian Home Ministry, foreign students would be allowed to work for 48 hours per fortnight. This means that students would be able to work for 24 hours in per week. This rule will be implemented from July 1, 2023.
As per the previous rules, foreign students were allowed to work for 40 hours. However, with the comping of COVID-19 and a drastic shortage of labour in the country, the work hour limit was removed and students were allowed to work for as many hours as they could.
The aim behind this cap is to allow foreign students support themselves while ,maintaining the main goal of their stay in Australia - to study.
"From 1 July 2023, work restrictions for student visa holders will be re-introduced and capped at the increased rate of 48 hours per fortnight. This ensures that student visa holders are able to focus on obtaining a quality Australian education and qualification, while remaining able to support themselves financially, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to Australia’s workforce needs," stated the Australian Home Ministry.
Apart from this, the Australian government has also announced a two year extension of post-study work rights for international students.
This extension however, would be made available for candidates with select degrees and whose field areas are in a skill shortage. This post-study extension would be given to international students an extra 2 years on their Temporary Graduate Visa.
For certain Bachelor Degrees, the post study stay would be extended from two to four years and three to five years for certain masters Degrees. For Doctoral qualifications, the post study period would be extended from four to six years.
