Increasing number of UK Student Visas granted shows higher enrollments, especially from India, China, Nigeria
United Kingdom, UK’s Home Ministry has revealed an increase in the number of UK Student Visas granted in the past year. Based on the data revealed, the increase in student visas granted is related to an increase in the number of enrollments in Higher Education Institutions, especially students from India, Nigeria and China.
Based on data issued by the UK Home Office, the number of international students enrolled in British higher education institutions has jumped more than 12 percent in the academic year of 2021 to 2022.
Recently, the UK Home Office also shared last year that the number of Indian students in the UK has surpassed that of Chinese students. The Home office also revealed that the number of visas granted went up by 273 percent compared to 2019.
Based on information released by the British High Commissioner, out of the 2.8 lakh student visas issued by UK in 2022, 25 percent of these visas were for Indian Students. Around 1,118,000 Indian students were approved for the UK Student Visa in June 2022
As per the UK Immigration statistics for 2022, a quarter of the international students currently in the UK are Indians. In the UK for the year 2021 to 2022, 44,195 students are from Nigeria and 1,51,690 students are from China.
This development comes as the UK is currently facing a political crisis due to an increase in immigration rates. The UK Government has been trying to implement policies to curb the entry of foreigners in the country, and international students are expected to be impacted as well.
UK Home Minister Suella Braverman recently proposed new tweaks to the Graduate Visa by reducing the post-study stay period for international students. However, despite major resistance from the Department of Education, the proposal is in talks.
