What is Mifepristone abortion pill and why has it been banned by Texas judge

US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee in Texas, ordered a hold on federal approval of mifepristone - a medication that has been widely available for more than 20 years.

Two judges in Washington and Texas delivered conflicting rulings over the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone on Friday. Being widely available for more than 20 years, the abortion pill mifepristone is often prescribed along with misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks. Medication abortions make up more than half of all abortions in the United States.

US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump appointee in Texas, ordered a hold on federal approval of mifepristone.

Meanwhile, US District Judge Thomas O' Rice, an Obama appointee, directed authorities not to make any changes that would restrict access to the drug in at least 17 states where Democrats sued to protect its availability.

WHAT IS MEDICATION ABORTION?

The abortion pill, also known as medication abortion or medical abortion, is a non-surgical method of terminating a pregnancy. The medication is a combination of two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for a pregnancy to continue. This causes the lining of the uterus to break down and the pregnancy to end. Misoprostol is taken a few days later and helps to expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

The abortion pill is typically used in the early stages of pregnancy, up to 10 weeks after the last menstrual period. It is a safe and effective method of abortion, with a success rate of over 95 per cent. It is also less invasive than surgical abortion and allows individuals to have more control over the process.
