Israel removes mentions of Greta Thunberg from school curriculum
Israel's Education Ministry on Monday responded to climate activist Greta Thunberg's "stand with Palestine" social media post, saying that her stand "disqualified her from being an educational and moral role model" to Israeli students.
Israel's Education Ministry further said that it will be removing any references to Thunberg in school curriculums, the Jerusalem Post reported.
"Hamas is a terrorist organization responsible for the murder of 1,400 innocent Israelis, including children, women, and the elderly, and it has abducted over 200 people to Gaza. This stance disqualifies her from being an educational and moral role model, and she is no longer eligible to serve as an inspiration and educator for Israeli students," the ministry said, according to the report.
On Friday, Greta Thunberg shared a social media post, voicing her support for “justice and freedom for Palestinians”.
She wrote on X, "Week 270. Today we strike in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected."
In her X thread, she further said that she was "against the horrific attacks by Hamas", adding that "the world needs to speak up and call for an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for Palestinians and all civilians affected".
Israel, on its official X handle, had condemned Greta Thunberg's post, saying “Hamas doesn’t use sustainable materials for their rockets which have butchered innocent Israelis. The victims of the Hamas massacre could have been your friends. Speak up.”
Criticising Thunberg's post, a group of Israeli environmental activitists also wrote an open letter, calling her stand on the matter as "appallingly one-sided, ill-informed, superficial and are in complete contrast to your ability to deep dive into details and get to the bottom of complex issues," as per the Times of Israel.
The Israel-Hamas war which began after Hamas' rocket attacks on Israel on October 7 and Israel's counterstrike on the Gaza Strip, has killed over 1,400 Israelis and over 4,700 Palestinians in Gaza.
